Leo's father Aaron Shorthouse told 9 News he believed it was the first time he saw a vending machine, "We live up in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, and I don't think he's seen a vending machine before, so he saw the Oreos, and some biscuits and a few other things."

The boy had become understandably stressed during the ordeal, an Melbourne Fire Brigade spokesman said, adding that the rescue proved to be delicate.

The rescue operation ended up taking six hours, Leo was sedated multiple times and distracted with smartphones while emergency crews worked with angle grinders to cut open the machine. Witnesses told local news they could hear his screams from the street.
Local media reported that Leo appeared unscathed but had been taken to the Royal Children Hospital in Melbourne for observation.
