Berated by her teacher: High school junior Shaniaya Hunter (left) says her history teacher, Cory Hunter (right) and called
'the dumbest girl' he's ever met
'the dumbest girl that I have ever met' and saying that her sole purpose in life would be to have sex and have children'
Shaniaya attends Greene County High
School, where Cory Hunter teaches world history and serves as head coach
of the boys' basketball team
Legal action: Shaniaya and her aunt have hired a lawyer and want the school to fire Cory Hunter for humiliating her
On
the day of the incident, she was sitting in Hunter's history class and
using a school-issued iPad to record the lecture because she was having
trouble seeing the blackboard.
The
day's lesson was about slavery, and at one point Hunter mentioned
Sojourner Truth, the 19th century abolitionist and women's rights
activist, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Shaniaya
asked Hunter who Sojourner Truth was, prompting him to launch what the
girl and her lawyer describe as an expletive-laden verbal attack against
her.
Shaniaya’s iPad picked up her teacher's rant, which she then put up on Soundcloud and later shared with media outlets.
In
the 4-minute recording, Hunter, who has no relation to Shaniaya, can be
heard telling the student: 'You know what? You might be the dumbest
girl I’ve ever met in my life and I have been around for 37 years and
clearly you are the dumbest girl that I have ever met.'
With
Shaniaya’s classmates giggling in the background, the teacher
continues: 'You know what your purpose gonna be? To have sex and have
children because you ain’t never gonna be smart.'
He then goes on to make fun of the 16-year-old's vision problems and
then tells her she should get married and change her last name.
Berated
over a question: Shaniaya (left) says Hunter (right) launched his
foul-mouthed tirade after she asked him about abolitionist
Sojourner Truth
When one of the other students in the classroom asks Hunter if he and Shaniaya are ‘kin,’ the teacher replies, 'No... s*** no!'
According to Shaniaya Hunter and her aunt, this was not the first time that Cory Hunter berated a student in class.
‘He
would get up in class the first day and tell the students that if they
didn’t want to be talked about, then get out of his class,’ Christie
Lockhart, the girl’s aunt whose daughter also attended Greene County
High several years ago, tells the station WSB-TV.
Hunter,
a father of two boys, has been with Greene County High School since
2011, serving as a world history teacher and head coach of the boys'
basketball team. In 2013, he was honoured as Teacher of the Year.
In
the wake of his confrontation with Shaniaya Hunter, the girl's family
has hired attorney Ben Windham on a pro bono basis and demanded that the
teacher be fired.
‘This man does not need to be teaching young children. It's not a gray area. End of story,’ Windham said.
Shaniya
and her family say the teen has been subjected to bullying in the
aftermath of her public humiliation and has received threats on social
media.
